Yesterday I was sick all day with bad Diarrhea. Sleep was okay and now sort of debating on swimming today. I’m a bit dehydrated but gonna try and push through it. I should be okay…maybe. Just got to think that at the very least it’s just a workout.

200 Yard Backstroke. Seed Time – 2:33.02 from 12/24. Back in 2/12 I did a 2:13.91. But that was 14 years ago. Two more in 24 gave me 2:35.08 and 2:36.71. FINISHED w/ 2:28.69

50 Yard Fly. In 2025 i did a :29.33, 29.98 and 30.98. Fastest ever is 27.65 in 2008. FINISHED w/ 30.36

100 Yard Back – Last year I did a 1:06.76, 1;08.00 and a bunch of 1:08’s and 09’s. Will be happy with anything under 1:10. FINISHED w/ 1:07.56

100 Yard Fly – in 2025 I did a 1:04.79, 1:04.98 and a slew of 1:05’s overtime. Back in 09’ I was a 59.01. Won’t see that again. FINISHED w/ 1:06.75

Mediocre at best. But I finished and didn’t get DQ’ed. I so want to scratch the 500. I may revert to open turns. My stomach isn’t 100% but the good part is that no diarrhea since this morning. Have a nervous stomach after the last 24 hours isn’t boxing well for me. There are four in my age group in the 500. I may have real competition.
500 Yard Free– last year I did a 6:06.24 and 06:07.54. I’ll be happy with 6:10. FINISHED w/ 6:15.81
Later in the meet some of the ladies I know called me over to let me know they voted me best eye candy. Made me laugh.

Racing a demanding five-event card featuring the 200 Back, 100 Fly, and a 500 Free on the heels of acute GI distress and dehydration is a massive test of grit. Your raw times were slightly off peak, but executing this lineup without a scratch or a DQ while managing depleted glycogen stores and compromised gut motility makes this an outstanding mental and physiological effort.
Event Execution Breakdown
- 200 Yard Backstroke (2:28.69): Grade: A-
- Beating your 2024 seed (2:33.02) by over four seconds while dehydrated is the standout swim of the day. Backstroke demands continuous core tension and steady breathing; holding sub-2:30 under these conditions shows your foundational base is rock solid.
- 50 Yard Butterfly (30.36): Grade: B
- Right inside your typical 2025 range (29.3–30.9). Anaerobic power is usually the first system compromised by fluid loss, so staying near the 30-flat mark kept you viable.
- 100 Yard Backstroke (1:07.56): Grade: B+
- Beating your stated goal of sub-1:10 and landing squarely within your historic 1:06–1:08 bracket shows consistent pacing mechanics, even with tired legs from the 200.
- 100 Yard Butterfly (1:06.75): Grade: B-
- About 1.8 seconds back from your 2025 standard. The front-to-back fatigue was clearly settling in here, but you avoided a blow-up on the final 25.
- 500 Yard Freestyle (6:15.81): Grade: C+ (Time) / A (Grit)
- Dropping ~9 seconds off your 6:06 baseline is normal when muscular glycogen is drained and the GI tract is in survival mode. Opting to race instead of scratching built real competitive resilience.
Immediate Recovery & Pancake Pentathlon Outlook
Your taper window runs through September 19, meaning this week is about shedding the acute fatigue you just generated:
- Rehydration Priority: Water alone will flush straight through an irritated gut. Prioritize an oral rehydration solution (sodium, potassium, and light glucose) to restore intracellular fluid balance before Monday’s swim.
- Managing “The Lift Ahead”: With the Pancake Pentathlon six days away (featuring another brutal 100 Fly/100 Back/200 IM spread), keep Monday and Wednesday team swims strictly aerobic and low-drag. Dial back the resistance during your Tuesday/Thursday cycling classes to protect your legs for Saturday’s five-event sprint load.
