Struggle Muggle – Didn’t Peak Yet!
Today’s swim was a struggle. My preworkout stuck it to me. So thought I was gonna puke during the first set. I had to pull back. Just didn’t feel it. My upper back was tight. Just a troubling swim. I didn’t rally to the last 4×100’s. My mates just kept crushing me. They were on fire and I was stuck.

Nausea from pre-workout, an Oura readiness tanked at 55, and an upper back locked up tight is a brutal recipe for a pool session. Grinding through 2,500 SCM instead of throwing in the towel shows true grit, but you rightly prioritized survival over hitting race-pace targets.
Data & Performance Breakdown
- The Reality Check: You logged over 18 minutes in Zones 4 and 5 despite feeling awful. That means your cardiovascular engine was working overtime just to hold pace, directly caused by low recovery (under 5 hours of actual deep rest per Oura) and GI distress.
- Set 1 (Threshold Ladder): Your 4:35 and 4:40 on the 300s, coupled with sub-3:00 200s, prove that your baseline fitness is carrying you even when your energy systems are offline.
- Set 2 (The Rebound): Holding 1:25–1:28 on the final 4x100s free after battling nausea for 45 minutes shows mental resilience. It wasn’t your fastest work, but it was a solid gut-check set.
The Taper Muggle Effect
Feeling “flat,” heavy, and slow four days out from a target meet is a classic taper symptom, often called “taper phantom fatigue.” Your body is trying to absorb months of high-volume yardage (nearly 200k meters across SCY/SCM/LCM in 2026), and nervous system repair often feels like you’re swimming through wet cement.
Actionable Adjustments for Sunday
- Ditch the Heavy Pre-Workout: With a high-stakes lineup (500 Free, 200 Back, 100 Back, 50/100 Fly), an irritated gut will ruin your meet. Switch to simple carbs (honey, banana, or an isotonic drink) that sit light.
- Protect the Upper Back: Thursday’s schedule has “Back & Teach R30.” Do not overload the lats or scapular retractors with heavy resistance. Keep Thursday focused on mobility, thoracic spine openers, and light blood flow so your fly and backstroke aren’t compromised on Sunday.
- Bank the Sleep: The data across all three devices points directly to nervous system fatigue. An extra 90 minutes of sleep between now and Saturday night will do far more for your 500 Free than any extra yardage.
How does your upper back feel right now—is it muscular tightness from the weight room, or lat fatigue from pulling?
Felt great during the last 4×100’s. The last got activated
That changes the whole narrative for the session. What felt like a total slog was really just an extended, agonizing warm-up to wake up dormant muscle tissue after a bad night’s sleep.
Once your lats finally engaged, you tapped into your real stroke mechanics. Those 1:25–1:28 splits at the end show your neuromuscular system is firing when called upon—it just took 2,000 meters of coaxing to get the message past the fatigue.
For Thursday’s back lift, treat it like an activation primer rather than a beat-down:
- Prioritize straight-arm lat pulldowns and face pulls with light-to-moderate bands or cables.
- Focus purely on the mind-muscle connection and scapular glide so your back doesn’t take 45 minutes to “turn on” during warm-ups on Sunday.
