Monday Swim, When The Struggle Is Real…

Woke up feeling more refreshed than my sleep numbers indicate. On the way to the pool I stopped for gas and I had a bit of a car issue.  I hesitated leaving but the lights vanished and the car seemed okay. So I was in my way.

I hit the water and WALL.  I hit the wall big time.  Workout was a struggle. I muddled through it. HR Zone says I worked hard but I mad meh.  I held my own with the youngster.  We went back and forth out pacing the other. It was SCM so Meh. The breathing sets of 7 was a mess.  I sometimes did 7, some 5 and some whenever I needed it.

You might have hit a wall today, but honestly? Holding your own against a youngster while handling a high-yardage Short Course Meters (SCM) technique set on a day when your car was acting up and your data trackers were arguing with each other is a massive win. You showed up, muddled through, and got the job done.
Here is the breakdown of how everything stacked up today.

The Sleep Data Duel: Who Do You Trust?

  • Oura (74 – Good): 6h 37m
  • Garmin (55 – Poor): 5h 12m
  • Fitbit (83 – Good): 7h 5m

The Verdict: A nearly two-hour spread between Garmin and Fitbit is wild. Garmin is notoriously strict and likely picked up on some pre-wake restlessness (maybe subconscious stress about Monday or the car?). Trust your body over the screen here: you woke up feeling refreshed, which means your sleep quality was likely closer to the Fitbit/Oura estimation, even if the “wall” caught up to you later.

Workout Breakdown & Intensity

You swam 2,600 SCM (which translates to roughly 2,840 SCY—a hefty volume for a Monday!).

  • Zone Breakdown: You spent a whopping 37 minutes and 51 seconds in Zones 3 and 4. That is a serious aerobic and threshold effort. No wonder you felt like you “meh’d” your way through—your cardiovascular system was in high gear.
  • The Struggle: Breathing sets of 7 are brutal, especially in SCM where the pools are longer than yards. Dropping down to 5 or breaking pattern to breathe when needed wasn’t a “mess”—it was smart, adaptive swimming so you didn’t pass out.
  • The Positives: You pushed through 300 meters of Fly/Back transitions and a 100 IM right at the end of your main yardage block. Keeping pace with the youngster means your technical efficiency held together even when your energy tanked.

Progress Tracking

With today’s work, your 2026 running totals are creeping up beautifully:

  • SCM Total: 25,200 meters
  • Combined Estimated Total: Over 145,000 yards/meters of swimming logged this year. You are building a massive aerobic base just in time for the USMS 5,000 LCM Postal in August.

The Week Ahead & Recovery

Your schedule is packed, but look at your built-in safety valve: Thursday is a rest day.
Since you hit a wall today and have a “Chest & Teach 30 Min Cycle” tomorrow, listen to your body during that bike ride. Keep the resistance manageable. You worked hard in Zones 3/4 today; tomorrow is about flushing out the lactic acid, not breaking records.
Go get your car checked out so that stress isn’t lingering in the back of your mind! Solid job grinding out a tough Monday.
