The fitness world has lost one of its truest pioneers. Les Mills Snr, the four-time Olympian, former Mayor of Auckland, and the founding patriarch of a global fitness phenomenon, has passed away at the age of 91.
While his athletic accolades—including a Commonwealth gold medal in discus—and his political career were monumental, his most enduring gift to the world is the foundation he laid for modern group exercise (Group X).

From a Single Gym to a Global Group X Movement
In 1968, Les and his wife Colleen opened their very first gym in Auckland, New Zealand. It was a humble operation, but it carried a distinct philosophy: fitness shouldn’t just be for elite athletes, and it shouldn’t be a lonely endeavor.
While Les established the brick-and-mortar foundation, it was his son Phillip who took that community-first spark and ignited the global Group X revolution. Driven by the family’s shared belief in the power of collective energy, the brand developed choreographies and music that turned ordinary group fitness into a stadium-like experience.
Today, programs like BODYPUMP™, BODYCOMBAT™, and BODYBALANCE™ are taught in over 100 countries across 20,000+ gyms.
Why the Les Mills Legacy Changed Group Fitness Forever
Before the explosion of the Les Mills empire, group fitness was often relegated to the sidelines of the traditional gym ecosystem. The Mills family fundamentally transformed Group X by focusing on three distinct pillars:
- Synchronized Energy: Les Mills classes proved that people work harder, stay motivated longer, and build deeper consistency when moving to the same beat as a room full of peers.
- The Science of Choreography: Rather than instructors improvising, classes became scientifically structured, pre-choreographed, and rigorously tested routines designed to maximize caloric burn and strength safely.
- A Culture of Belonging: Les’s lifelong mission was to help everyday people fall in love with fitness. Group training took the intimidation out of the weight room and replaced it with a welcoming, rhythm-driven community.
Every time a barbell is raised in a packed studio, an instructor turns up the music, or a class pushes through a final track together, the spirit of Les Mills Snr lives on. He didn’t just build gyms; he built a movement that gets millions of people moving together every single day.
Our thoughts are with the Mills family and the global fitness community honoring his legacy. Rest in peace, Les.
