ADH swim’D – It’s Taper Time So Bosy Is Getting It Easier So My Mind Is Making It Harder.

At this point of the week my Sleep Debt is lower than normal.  Usually I’m above 5 hours by Friday and bring it down over the weekend. The sleep numbers aren’t great but good or normal for me.

This morning waking up was better than the day before. Did better at night. Hell I even drank more water all day.

Hopefully today we will have LCM Swimming. Registration for Bumoy closes Monday at midnight so hopefully we will have psych / heat sheets by Wednesday.

Also today my Fitbit Air arrives so I’ll set it up and start t wear it.  Just another way to track things.

What’s up with this Short Course Shit?  The Indoor Pool is all SCY and the Iutdoor Pool has LCM but missing several lane lines. I know it’s summer camp and learn to swim programs for summer but F!  When I was a kid 50 something years ago summer was LCM. Period.

BUMPY is one week away and after two shitty swim workouts for me today I was better. But it was Kick/Swim. Grrrr….but it was LCM.  A bunch of the other swimmers who are going to Bumpy have just been doing SCM. I don’t know how they can do that. I’ve been swimming LCM and I don’t feel ready for this meet. If I was just Shoet Course I think I’d die.

One of my swim mates asked “How Many Calories I Burn” and to be honest I don’t look at that anymore. But today I did and it was 498 and that was a Taper Workout.

Everything in now a Taper!!!

Gemini AI Rate My Workout:

### **Workout Rating: 8.5 / 10 – The Taper Sweet Spot**

This workout did exactly what a taper session is supposed to do: it backed off the volume while keeping the engine warm. The 2400 distance is a solid drop-down, and the structure prioritized feel and technique over brute endurance.

 * **Zone Distribution:** You spent about 28 minutes in Zones 1 and 2, which is perfect for active recovery and flushing out the muscles. Keeping about 17 minutes in Zones 4 and 5 ensures your cardiovascular system doesn’t fall asleep before the meet.

 * **Kick/Swim Focus:** Kicking sets during a taper are fantastic for maintaining leg speed and body position without overloading the shoulders, especially with that 200 Fly looming on Day 1.

 * **Caloric Burn:** Hitting 498 calories on a taper workout is completely normal. The intensity and volume are dialed back, so the metabolic demand naturally drops. Watching those numbers fall can feel counterintuitive, but it means the taper is working.

### **The Psychology of the Taper**

“Body is getting it easier so my mind is making it harder.” This is a classic, universally recognized symptom of tapering, often called the “taper tantrums” or “taper madness.”

When training volume drops, the central nervous system suddenly has excess energy that it usually spends on heavy physical recovery. That surplus energy easily converts into anxiety, overthinking, and feeling inexplicably sluggish or unprepared in the water. Feeling unready for Bumpy Jones right now is a psychological trick of the taper, not a reflection of your physical fitness. The hay is already in the barn.

### **The LCM vs. SCY Struggle**

The frustration with summer pool setups is entirely valid. Training for an LCM meet in a SCY pool is a massive disadvantage because the wall-to-swimming ratio completely alters your rhythm, stroke count, and breathing patterns.

For grueling events like the 400 Free and 200 Fly, finding and utilizing that LCM water, even if it requires dodging missing lane lines, is critical. Those swimmers prepping for Bumpy exclusively in SCM are going to feel a rude awakening on the back half of their races when those long course walls seem miles away. Securing the LCM yardage—putting you over 61,000 for the year—is a massive competitive advantage.

### **Metrics & Recovery Check-In**

 * **Sleep Discrepancy:** Oura (72, Moderate) and Garmin (56, Poor) are disagreeing slightly, but the overarching trend is positive. Waking up feeling better, improving nighttime restlessness, and keeping the sleep debt under 4 hours by Friday is a major win for the end of the week.

 * **Hydration:** Nailing the water intake directly supports better sleep architecture and muscle recovery during this critical pre-meet window.

 * **New Tech:** Adding the Fitbit Air to the mix will provide another fascinating data layer, especially to see how its sleep and recovery algorithms compare to the Oura and Garmin baselines.

### **The Road to Bumpy**

With registration closing Monday and psych sheets dropping Wednesday, the reality of the meet is setting in. The dryland schedule shifting down to Taper (50-60%) perfectly aligns with the pool work. Keep trusting the reduced yardage, let the muscles top off their glycogen stores, and try to ignore the mind games. You are absolutely primed for this.
