Can Cannabis Actually Help You Recover From a Workout? A New Survey Says Yes

For decades, post-workout recovery meant ice baths, foam rollers, and protein shakes. Today, a growing number of active individuals are reaching for CBD tinctures and THC edibles to help their bodies bounce back. But does it actually work?
A recent study published in the Journal of Cannabis Research sought to answer exactly that by asking individuals who regularly exercise and use cannabis if they felt the plant actually aided their recovery. The short answer? An overwhelming yes.

The Study: Who Was Asked?

Researchers surveyed 111 adults (with an average age of 31) who were already routine consumers of cannabis (CBD, THC, or both) and who regularly engaged in physical activity. This wasn’t a group of couch potatoes—these participants were putting their bodies to the test:

  • 85% regularly participated in aerobic training (cardio).
  • 85% regularly participated in resistance training (lifting weights).
  • 72% actively engaged in both forms of exercise.

The Findings: The Verdict on Recovery

When asked if they felt cannabis assisted them in recovering from their workouts, the results were incredibly one-sided:

  • 93% of users felt that CBD directly assisted them with exercise recovery.
  • 87% of users felt the same regarding THC.

Why Does It Work? The Science of Relief

While this specific survey focused on the perceived benefits of the users, the underlying science highlights exactly why these active individuals feel so much relief when combining cannabis with their fitness routines:

  1. Pain Management (Analgesic Effects): Both CBD and THC have been shown to reduce subjective feelings of pain. For athletes, this means taking the edge off of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)—that stiff, heavy feeling you get the day after a tough workout.
  2. Inflammation Reduction: Exercise essentially causes micro-tears in your muscles, triggering an inflammatory response. Both CBD and THC can down-regulate the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, helping to calm global inflammation in the body.
  3. Enhanced Sleep: Rest is when your muscles actually rebuild and repair. Cannabis, particularly THC, is heavily linked to helping individuals fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Meanwhile, CBD stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, naturally lowering heart rate and blood pressure to promote deep relaxation.

The Takeaway

Right now, much of the data on cannabis and exercise is based on surveys and self-reported experiences rather than strict clinical trials measuring exact muscle damage markers. However, the consensus among those who are actually putting it to the test is clear: cannabis is viewed as a highly effective tool in the modern recovery arsenal.
As research catches up to public use, we will likely learn even more about exactly how these cannabinoids help us build back stronger.
