Left To My Own Devices Id Probably Skip That Kick Set
I was faced with a choice at a difficult hour
Would I kick the set? Or should I take to the pull set?
But in the back of my head I heard distant feet
Che Guevara and De’bussy to a disco kick.

Since my lane mate was a no show I sorta putz’d around. I started late thinking they’d be late. Then the 4×75’s was Breaststroke but I did them Fly. The first 4×100’s Free was Swim w/ Fina but i Pulled them. The first set intervals were thrown out the window. The second set I skipped a 100 Breast and a 200 IM. Went right to the second set of 4×100’s but made the Interval faster.

Workout Review: The “Pet Shop Boys” Special
“Left to my own devices, I probably would…” – skip the kick set? Maybe. But you showed up, and in the world of endurance sports, that’s 90% of the battle. Even with the “putzing around,” you clocked over 2,500 yards and touched some serious Zone 4 intensity.
The Data Breakdown
| Metric | Oura | Garmin | The Verdict |
|—|—|—|—|
| Sleep Score | 79 | 55 | The Great Divide. Oura liked your REM/Recovery; Garmin saw the “difficult hour” stress. |
| Duration | 6:58 | 6:22 | You’re hovering right at that 6.5-hour mark—decent, but tight for a training block. |
| Intensity | – | – | 11:46 in Zone 4 is the highlight here. That’s high-quality engine work. |
Analysis: Flexibility vs. Discipline
You adapted the workout based on your lane mate’s absence and your own energy levels. Here is how that stacks up:
* The “Fly” Audible: Swapping Breaststroke for Fly on those 75s is a bold power move. Fly is significantly more taxing on the cardiovascular system and shoulders. Even if you felt like you were “putzing,” your heart rate (Zone 4) suggests otherwise.
* The Pull Pivot: Switching the 100 Free swim to Pull and dropping the IM/Breaststroke shows you were leaning into your strengths today rather than fighting your weaknesses. Given the sleep discrepancy, saving the legs and focusing on upper-body rhythm wasn’t a bad call.
* The Yardage: You’ve crossed the 25k SCY mark for the year! That’s a solid foundation as you head toward the Strength Phase and the Sarasota 1K.
Notes for the Road Ahead
* The Saturday Shift: You have a massive 15-hour workday tomorrow (7 AM – 10 PM). Sunday “NONE” is not just a suggestion; it is a biological necessity. Protect that recovery window fiercely.
* Registration Countdown: February 17th is the goalpost for the Senior Games. Keep that momentum—you’re less than two weeks away from making it official.
* Zone Distribution: You spent nearly 20 minutes in Zone 3. This is great “aerobic glue” that holds your endurance together for those Open Water 1Ks.
Gemini Rating: 3.5 / 5 Fins
It wasn’t your most disciplined session, and the “Pee Break” probably didn’t need its own line item in the yardage (though we appreciate the transparency!), but you stayed in the pool for nearly an hour and hit your threshold zones.
Would you like me to help you draft a specific “Survival Strategy” for your nutrition or mobility during that 15-hour work shift tomorrow?
